How FMW builds OOBS - A Cautionary Tale
1) Select a kit to build; in this case, an AMT 1966 Mustang hardtop. Not the new release, but one from 1977.
2) Fill the sink marks, trim the flash, and putty the ill-fitting front & rear pans. (1977 was NOT a good vintage for AMT styrene.)
3) Prime with Duplicolor Red Primer (for compatibility with red color coat) & sand.
4) Airbrush Createx Auto Air Detail Crimson.
5) Observe that color coat is more transparent than expected, resulting in a reddish brown color. Decide that color is acceptable and proceed.
6) Apply metal foil to appropriate details.
7) Clear coat with airbrushed Future floor wax.
8) Observe that clear coat has resulted in a semi-gloss finish.
9) Apply heavier coat of Future floor wax.
10) Observe good gloss in runs in too-heavy clear coat.
11) Attempt to sand out runs. Observe that paint does not so much abrade as shred, ripping off clear down to the primer.
12) Dump the whole car into a container with full-strength biodegradable, non-toxic Simple Green degreasing cleaner for two days.
13) Scrub off foil, Future, paint, and some primer with toothbrush in Simple Green. Scrub entire car with toothbrush in detergent.
14) Begin treating chemical burn on finger from working in "non-toxic" Simple Green with bare hands.
15) Prime car with Krylon Brushed Metallic Satin Caramel Latte. (Had it sitting around, figured, "Why not?")
16) Airbrush Createx Auto Air Detail Crimson.
17) Apply metal foil to appropriate details.
18) Clear coat with Krylon Clear Polyurethane.
19) Observe that clear coat is glossy but sprikely (not so much orange peel as tiny spikes).
20) Attempt to sand an area smooth. Sand down to primer.
21) Touch up oversanded spot.
22) Apply more Clear Polyurethane.
23) Observe that sprikely areas now vary from kinda bumpy to almost smooth. Decide that finish is acceptable. (Note: The definition of "acceptable" tends to decline as setbacks occur.)
24) Assemble model.
25) Violate rules of "OOBS" by using previously made clear cast headlight lenses.
26) Declare victory and withdraw from the field.
Anyway, here's the result.
