I liked the look of the front of the Chevy SSR, but the rest of the vehicle was too square. And the world really doesn't need another small pickup. To alter the SSR more to my taste, I picked the '41 Plymouth as a donor to build the SSC (Super Sport Coupe). Here are photos of the cars sliced and spliced, ready for putty. As usual, more pics on are my Fotki page: public.fotki.com/FMW/wip/Constructive criticism is welcomed. FMW

That is cool. I like how the rear fenders keep the body lines going. Nice work I'll be watching for updates. Louie

Here's where I'm at on the SSC: Not as bad as it usually is when I think I've got the putty smooth, but there's still a few rough places to clean up. As usual, more pics are in my Fotki album. FMW

Here's the latest, in final (I hope) white primer. I'm going to play with the pictures in Paint Shop Pro to test paint schemes. I'm thinking Testors Inca Gold lacquer with maybe some orange trim. FMW

Here we are in Testors Inca Gold, after about two weeks of fighting brand new paint problems. After the Testors white primer, I used the Inca Gold lacquer. It showed up with pitting in several places. So I sanded them smooth and resprayed. The pits came back. I finally stripped the color coat off with thinner and discovered that the pitting was in the primer coat (thanks, Testors). I sanded the problem areas down to the grey primer and then applied the color paint until the underlayer variations were covered. How many cans of paint does it take to paint a car? At least one more than you sand off. FMW

I'm about done with the detail painting and ready to start on final assembly. Here's some pictures of details you'll never see once the model is assembled Here's the dash. The instruments are done on a decal, with markings so small you can barely see them up close. Once it's in the car under the roof, fugetaboudit. The decal sheet included markings for the three knobs and a bunch of under-hood stuff like the battery cover, all the fluid tank caps, two for the radiator hose, and an unreadable VIN plate. Most of them looked like they wouldn't settle down without precision trimming and/or a cup of decal set. I left them off. Here's the engine. All that keen texturing and the pipes and hoses will be concealed by the engine shroud, so they'll be hidden even with the hood open. FMW

Oh, that's looking great! I love the two colors together. Anxious to see the body finalized!
Great job, Jan!

I had this ambitious plan to fog the lower edges of the fenders with the brown color (that Testors calls Fiery Orange). However, after using three cans of paint just to get an acceptable coat of the gold, I think I'll put that idea aside for something without quite so much body work.

That is looking really good, Jan. The way you displayed the dash in relation to the interior tub reminds me of a old dated joke and it helps you are a retired engineer.
JOKE: IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT! IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT! General Motors has just announced that it will be putting the dimmer switch back on the floorboard as there are too many (ASU, or any school here) engineering graduates getting there feet tangled up in the steering wheel!

Haw! That's as good as the one that was going around when state quarters were hot. Story goes that they let the Texas Tech boys design the Texas state quarter. It had a problem working with vending machines, though. The duct tape holding the two dimes and a nickel together kept jamming in the slot.
Ba Dum Bum.
