Agreed.... but the rivet counters REALLY pissed me off. I almost joined the board just to level them... but then figured what's the use. They're in their own little 'I know everything' world and aren't worth the trouble. Sure it's got some technical errors like the wheels studs, but who gives a rat's ass? The model is beautiful, and I for one am glad he comes to our show whenever he can.

I admire John for his shyness of his true ability. It just amazes me that people have the balls to point out anything wrong given John stated it was his build being done his way. I had better stop here!!

You said it well on all accounts.
I think there was a lot of jealousy showing through those comments.
Some of those guys (jerks) who were bashing John are the same guys who defended a couple of the lousiest model builders I've ever seen posting alleged models on the internet ... defended them by castigating the people who honestly replied to requests for feedback. When the feedback was not "you're the greatest builder ever and your model is perfect," the posters whined and then these same guys (jerks) attacked the commenters. By the way, the commenters are among the better builders around.
Now, those guys (jerks) are doing the attacking against a fabulous modeler and a really very good model ~ maybe not his best, but far better than any of them build.
I didn't try to defend John's model in the thread for the same reason ... the idiots (jerks and their cheerleaders) wouldn't get it and everybody else already knows better.
Rock on, John!!

The thread in question is a great read - both for the close look at the work of a great model builder and as a study in the negative side of human nature. I have to agree that the tone of the negative comments seem to be thinly disguised jealousy. John is a great modeler and I have always found him to be extremely open, friendly, and even humble when discussing the hobby and his creations. The ironic thing about the thread in question is that it could have stood as a way for folks to learn more about his great building techniques. John mostly withstood the "bullying" in a gentlemanly manner. He just kind of fell into the trap of trying to respond directly to the bullies with his "mind over matter" comment. Under similar circumstances, I don't think I could have been so mild mannered. I constantly am disappointed by folks that use the anonymity of the internet to throw politeness and mutual respect aside, making comments that they never would make in a face to face conversation. When the bullies attempted to equate proper manners and tone with unacceptable fawning I just about threw up. OK, time to get off my soap box. Back to model building. Bernie

I read all the comments myself and really couldn't believe how rude folks are. The build is really nice. How come people can't just make a suggestion on how to square up the wheel studs? That would be more helpful to John than just bashing and looking for what's wrong with it. I build lots of different stuff and its not always correct. I can bet for sure this will be the last time John will post anything. I have been the poster before and have had my builds bashed by guys "who know everything" and it feels pretty bad. I built a 64 Dodge nypd car and guys said they never used that model car, wrong police radio, antennas, color interior and all sorts of stuff. It's bull. I feel for him. Sorry for the rant, just that I've been there. Louie

I have found that a lot of people on forums think they are prima donnas. Everybody is a critic! I have been doing plumbing work since 1978. I worked at Purdue University from 78 to 2000 and at Arizona State University from 2000 to the present. I worked with some of the old timers at Purdue. You also had to work around class schedules. That made a slow job slower. Out of boredom, I got on a couple of plumbing forums. I got ripped to shreds because I was considered some useless hack maintenance plumber. Yup, that did hurt. Most of those guys are residential plumbers. Most of those guys wouldn't make a pimple on a good plumbers ass! With modern plumbing materials I doubt that many of them have even threaded a piece of pipe. Most of them are probably guys that are installing new plumbing in a new home. Not really that hard. That is nice clean plumbing work. With roto hammers and core drills and modern tools it's pretty quick work to make a nice round hole in a wall or floor for a new pipe in an existing floor or wall. Drywall is easy to work with too. These guys have no real appreciation of their trade. Before those tools existed there were tools called star bits. You had to hit them with a thing called a hammer. In a old original University or most old public buildings that were built like a brick (you know) house it would take several days to chisel a hole through a wall for a pipe. The guys doing the work may have been making 75 cents an hour too. And then they have to put the plumbing in! Old drain pipes that are bell and spigot are put together with a oily rope called Oakum and then lead is poured in and tamped down to seal it. They don't use this much any more since lead fumes are hazardous. Now you cut pipes and use clamps or glue. Glue fumes will make you goofy too. That's partly what happened to me. I spent my first several years at Purdue tearing out old laboratories down to the brick walls and below the floors and installing complete new labs. Anyway, we live in a world of instant gratification and everybody is a know it all. I am fortunate that nobody comes down to my resin casting work and pisses and moans or cries big tears about what I am doing or not doing.
