Hi gang!! Can someone give me a current list of decent shops. When I search online a lot of the shops have closed up. I went to national hobbies in chandler and they only had ten car kits and nine of them were NASCARs. Clunky. Thanks for your help. Louie

I'd never even heard of National until you mentioned it.
The best shop in town (for cars) used to be Hobbytown USA in Gilbert (Baseline & Gilbert Road), but they seem to be fading ... They carry Tamiya paints and Testors One Coat paints. They carry Model Cars Magazine and Scale Auto Magazine. No discounts.
Next best ~ now "best" based on HTUSA's fadeout ~ is Hobby Depot on Southern just west of Mill Road in Tempe. Plus, they consistently sponsor Desert Scale Classic! They carry Tamiya paints and Testors One Coat paints. No car magazines. No discounts.
Next up would probably be Andy's Hobby Headquarters on 59th Ave just south of Greenway Road. He carries Tamiya paints and Testors One Coat paints. No magazines. No discounts.
Then, there's Hobby Bench at 43rd Ave and Bell, followed by Hobby Bench at 19th Ave and Northern. Neither of them carries Testors One Coat paints, but Bell carries Tamiya paints. Bell carries Model Cars Magazine and Scale Auto Magazine, but Northern carries no car magazines. No discounts.
Not strictly a car model shop, but all the Hobby Lobby craft stores usually have a wide variety of mainstream kits, name-brand tools and supplies, and Testors paints. They do not carry Tamiya paints. None of them carries magazines. Look for their periodic 30% off sales and their regular 40% off one item coupons.
Likewise, all the Michaels craft stores carry a supply of model car kits, although generally older issues (last year's) than Hobby Lobby. They also have name-brand tools and supplies but a limited inventory of Testors paints. No Tamiya paints and none of the new Testors One Coat paints are carried. None of them carries magazines. Look for their periodic 30% off sales and their regular 40% off one item coupons.
I don't know of any other shops in the Phoenix area.
I generally get my new kit fix from Mike Cholewa or Tommy Neu, both members of Moonlight Modelers and Cactus Car Modelers. They offer the best prices around.
And, it's hard to beat the swap meets at the Postal Workers Social Hall in town; four each year ... March, April, July, and October.
Anybody else have any info?

Dan, "I generally get my new kit fix from Mike Cholewa or Tommy Neu." Ahem!!! Bernie And, I generally get my old kit fix from Bernie's Bargain Barn, which doesn't ordinarily carry new kits. And, since most car model shops don't carry older kits ~ Bernie's is the ONLY place to go!

Besides, you're not at the very bottom ... there's a couple below the bottom level.

Both Andy's and Hobby Depot do in fact caring magazines and both from time to time run deals for discounts and Hobby Depot has a card you can get that they punch for every $5 you spend there and when you spend $100 you get $10 off your next visit.

I was not meaning to 'dis' anyone, but I've never seen a car magazine at Andy's (lots of military, tho); Hobby Depot did not carry MCM and recently said they had discontinued carrying SA; but if they've resumed SA and started MCM, I didn't know it.
You're right about Hobby Depot's punch card thing, but I don't consider that a discount since it's only 10% one time after you spend a bunch of money at MSRP many times.
Andy offers discounts? The only time I ever saw him do a discount was the same Saturday as one of the swap meets or DSC, I think, and it was his anniversary sale. But on a regular basis, like HTUSA in Gilbert did when Bob was alive, or like Hobby Depot (used to do) and the former Gordon's did on a daily basis for club members? No.

No. The mags go fast so you have to know when they come in to get one. And the $10 deal was better then what the Hobby Town USA did out my way, there you had to spend a $100 to get $5 off and then you still had to spend $25 to use it. I don't know what the one did that Bob worked at as I've never been there. And Dan if you were on Andy's email list you would know when he is doing more discount stuff........... ;D ;D And Dan I know you weren't "dis" anyone, I was just adding what I know. which most times isn't very much!!! ;D ;D

Hey, That's cool ... despite the rumor, I don't know it all ... that's why I suggested anyone else chime in with more info ... Thanks for adding to the discussion.
BTW ~ I'm not on Andy's email list because ... Oh, well.PS: Actually, I get my magazines at my mailbox.
