This is one I started a long time back. its one I could never find a kit for but always wanted to build one. so I attempted on my own. once my skills get better its on the back burner.

I have wrapped a piece of sand paper around a short length of 3/4 in PVC pipe and used that as a sanding stick. I personally don't care for high RPM tools around my work. One little slip and all kinds of damage could happen. I'm no good at all with body putty either.

You obviously need some kind of backing for your fragile sanding. Modeling clay comes to mind, or maybe a layer of clay backed by styrofoam (or balsa or brick - whatever's handy). This is all theory - I've never tried it.
